Broken hip follows fall for canine

The dog, a boxer mix, was rescued Saturday by Storey County volunteers after spending more than three hours in the shaft.
The rescue workers set up a rope system to lower personnel into the vertical shaft and remove the dog.
The dog was immediately taken by its owners to a veterinarian's office, and the animal was expected to survive the injury, rescuers said.
The owners, who were not identified, were taking the dog for a walk on its birthday when the accident occurred about a half-mile up Seven Mile Canyon.
The Virginia City area is riddled with mine shafts dating back as far as 140 years. Many of the shafts aren't sealed or marked.
