March 11:Ray Hints He Was Triggerman: Others in Plot
Story: James Earl Ray pleaded guilty to the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in return for life yesterday, but he hinted he was not alone in the plot to slay the civil right leader.
After an hour and 55 minutes of token testimony a jury of 12 men, by prearrangement, convicted Ray and sentenced him to 99 years in prison.
July 2: $60 Million Hotel Will Open Today
Story: Fireworks and fanfare will open the $60 million International Hotel today in a two-day celebration highlighted by the premier performance of Academy Award-winning songstress Barbra Streisand.
July 21: World Cheers As American Flag Hoisted on the Moon
Story: Neil A. Armstrong climbed from the moon to the cabin of his Eagle lander at 10:09:32 p.m. (Nevada time) yesterday, slamming the Eagle's square hatch closed behind him to end man's first walk on an alien world after about 2 hours and 10 minutes on the lunar surface.
Aug. 10: Bizarre Murders Shock Hollywood
Story: Five persons, including Sharon Tate, a beautiful young Hollywood star, and a prominent men's hair stylist, were found shot or stabbed to death yesterday in a shocking and mysterious outbreak of violence that had aspects of a weird religious rite.
Nov. 14: Thousands March On Death
Story: Vietnam protesters bearing candles and the names of dead soldiers filed quietly from Arlington Cemetery past the White House to the foot of the U.S. Capitol yesterday to initiate a 40-hour "March Against Death."
