Sun Athletes of the Week: Andre Rhodes and Tera Anderson
Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000 | 11:44 a.m.
Male Athlete of the Week: ANDRE RHODES
School: Cimarron-Memorial
Class: Senior
Sport: Football
Last week: With the two-time defending state champs on the brink of elimination, Rhodes lifted the Spartans to a 21-20 victory over Cheyenne with two late touchdowns, a two-point conversion and a point-after kick. With Cimarron trailing 14-6 with just over a minute remaining, Rhodes scored on a 7-yard run, then ran in the two-pointer to knot the score and send the game into overtime. In the extra session, he got into the end zone from two yards out, then converted the extra point for the final margin of victory. "When it came down to the last six plays he asked for the ball," Cimarron coach Greg Spencer said. "Andre always seems to be a competitor."
Female Athlete of the Week: TERA ANDERSON
School: Durango
Class: Senior
Sport: Volleyball
Last week: Anderson helped the Trailblazers to a 1-1 record at last week's 4A State Tournament, racking up 30 kills and 36 digs in two matches. In round one, Anderson's 18 kills, four blocks and 23 digs lifted her team to a hard-fought win over Silverado, making Durango the only local squad to advance past round one. In the semifinals, she produced 12 kills and 13 digs in a losing effort against eventual state champ Churchill County. "Every aspect of her play was solid," Blazers coach Bob Kelly said. "She went out playing, in my opinion, her best volleyball of the year."
