CARSON CITY -- Sen. Bill Raggio, R-Reno, who shares the record for the longest service in the Senate, has been elected majority leader again, a post he has held since 1993.
Raggio, a lawyer, said the GOP caucus chose the same leadership as the 1999 session. Republicans hold control 12-9 in the upper house, and there were no changes in membership in the election.
Sen. Ray Rawson of Las Vegas was named assistant majority leader, and Lawrence Jacobsen of Minden was selected president pro-tem. Sens. Mark Amodei of Carson City and Maurice Washington of Sparks were named co-whips.
Raggio said committee assignments will be made later. But there are not expected to be any major changes.
Raggio and Sen. Joe Neal, D-North Las Vegas, have served since 1972, which breaks the old record of 28 years held by William Dressler of Douglas County.
Raggio said the caucus, held in Las Vegas, held a brief and preliminary discussion of some of the issues facing the 2001 Legislature but did not take any positions.
Sen. Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, earlier had been elected minority leader.
