Girl Scouts plan activity center in Boulder City’s Veterans Memorial Park

Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000 | 10:45 a.m.

The Girl Scout Frontier Council took a first step Tuesday toward creating an outdoor activity center in Boulder City.

The Boulder City Council approved a lease agreement that gives the Scouts use of 5 acres in Veterans Memorial Park, part of the master plan for the city park. Once the Frontier Council decides how to develop the space, the Scouts will have a six-year renewable lease.

However, the Girl Scouts won't be able to start on their hoped-for center for several years. First it is focused on raising money to build a new headquarters in Las Vegas.

The city of Las Vegas found a new site for the Girl Scouts administration offices, which currently are at 2530 Stewart Ave., when it sought to include the Stewart Avenue parcel in a project at the former National Guard Armory site.

The scouts must raise several million dollars for the new building at Harris Avenue and Mojave Road, near Freedom Park, Juergen Barbusca, Girl Scout spokesman, said.

Scout administrators hope to move into the new building within three years, he said.

Once the money is raised for the new building, the Girl Scouts hope to build an outdoor activity center at the park in Boulder City, Patricia Miller, Frontier Council executive director said.

Among the possibilities would be to create a permanent storage building for canoes, tents and other camping supplies. It would also be a good place for first-time camping experiences for younger scouts, but could be used by girls of all ages, Miller said.

City Council members had only one concern: Could the site potentially be used by other organizations such as the Boy Scouts or church groups? That wouldn't be a problem, Miller said, because the Girl Scouts share other properties with other groups.

The council also approved the removal of the three satellite antennas from a Boulder City neighborhood to a remote location because residents had complained that it was unsightly and there was too much construction and activity around the current site.

It may be as long as three months before the antennas are removed.
