Couple escape through window

A newlywed couple suffered smoke inhalation and cuts as they crawled through a window early this morning to escape their burning mobile home, Las Vegas fire officials said.

Firefighters were called to the Desert Mobile Home Park, 1500 N. Lamb Blvd., about 2:45 a.m. and found a singlewide mobile home on fire. The residents, a 65-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman, were sitting inside a parked car after escaping the home, officials said.

Firefighters needed about 10 minutes to douse the fire, which destroyed the trailer and its contents. Two cats died in the fire, officials said.

When the woman got up, she found the front part of the home on fire, blocking the exit. The couple broke out a rear window and escaped, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire destroys convenience store

A fire that destroyed a convenience store in a strip mall early this morning was intentionally started, Clark County Fire Department officials said.

The Golden Market, 1735 N. Nellis Blvd., was destroyed with damage estimated at $700,000, Steve La-Sky, a fire department spokesman, said.

Arson was determined to be the cause of the fire, but the investigation is continuing.

Firefighters were called to the store about 4:30 a.m. Flames were shooting out the front of the store, but the fire walls contained the blaze to the convenience store, La-Sky said.

Firefighters from Clark County, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas needed about 90 minutes to the bring the blaze under control. There was water and some smoke damage to adjacent stores, he said.

A Clark County fire captain injured his back at the scene and was taken to University Medical Center for treatment, La-Sky said.

Traffic backed up near the fire scene for hours this morning.

Man dies from his injuries

A 24-year-old man found robbed and beaten on the side of the road in October died earlier this month, Metro Police said

Ian Robert Annand was found by an officer on Oct. 1 about 11:10 p.m. in the area of Lamb Boulevard and Monroe Avenue.

On Nov. 1 Annand died at his home from complications of his injuries. Since his death occurred from the beating, it is considered a homicide, said Lt. Wayne Petersen of Metro's homicide unit.

Annand was able to tell friends and relatives that three men got out of a taxi and beat him. He was unable to give any other details, police said.

Annand's death is the 87th homicide so far this year in Metro's jurisdictions compared with 97 at the same point last year.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Metro's homicide unit at 229-3521 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

A 38-year-old Las Vegas woman died Monday night in a two-vehicle accident on Flamingo Road near Rainbow Boulevard, Metro Police said.

The pickup slid sideways across the westbound lanes and into a parking lot. Quintero crashed into a parked minivan. Quintero was taken to University Medical Center, where she died from her injuries, police said.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Detective William Redfairn at 229-3128 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
