Minor earthquake hits western Nevada

Monday, Nov. 13, 2000 | 12:11 p.m.

A minor earthquake struck in the desert near the remote community of Beatty on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The temblor was measured at 2.4 magnitude by the USGS and occurred at 8:06 a.m. about 40 miles northwest of Beatty, according to the USGS website and the University of Nevada, Reno website.

Sheriff's departments in Esmeralda or Nye counties had no reports of earthquake damage and had no calls from area residents, according to dispatchers.

"We didn't feel any shaking," said Joanie Jarvis, manager of the Rebel Oil truck stop in Beatty, 117 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

A geophysicist for the National Earthquake Information Center in Colorado reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was in a remote area.

"We've had earthquakes in that area in the past and no one has reported them," John Minsch said.
