Interviews got under way today in the search for the late District Judge Gary Redmon's replacement.
Fourteen attorneys are scheduled to be interviewed in private over the next two days to decide who is best qualified to sit in the seat left open when Redmon died Aug. 26.
The list will be narrowed to three and those names will be forwarded to Gov. Kenny Guinn, who must make a decision within 30 days.
The Commission on Judicial Selection, which will conduct the interviews in a closed session at the Nevada State Bar's office, is made up of three nonattorneys who are appointed by the governor and three attorneys appointed by the State Bar and Chief Justice Bob Rose. Two additional members are named when a District Court seat is vacant, one that is appointed by the governor and another by the State Bar.
The regular commission members are Rose, Marsha Deming, A. Allan Stipe, Drury J. Thiercof, Ronald D. Alling, Laura FitzSimmons and David Grundy.
Those who submitted their applications were Family Court Judge Robert Gaston, 61, and David B. Barker, 41, Doug Herndon, 36, Vicki Monroe, 50, and Abbi Silver, 35, all of the Clark County district attorney's office. Also applying are Phil Kohn, 50, the Clark County special public defender and James Gubler, 52, of the Clark County public defender's office.
Also in the running are private attorneys Kenneth Cory, 57, Allan Earl, 59, Robert Israel, 46, Michael Mills, 44, Robert Nersesian, 43, Kevin Utterback, 49, and Paul Wommer, 47.
In addition to the interviews, the commission will be looking at a lengthy application as well as comments from residents.
