LV couple sues over tire failure

Friday, Nov. 10, 2000 | 11:56 a.m.

A Las Vegas couple sued Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. of Nashville, Tenn., and Ford Motor Co., alleging a defective Firestone tire that is now being recalled nationwide blew out and caused $18,741 in damage to their 1996 Ford Explorer.

In a Clark County District Court lawsuit, Peter and Nancy Thomas, who alleged the accident occurred just days before the defendants publicly announced the recall of Firestone Radial ATX tires size P235/75R15, said their son, David, was driving their car on July 22 on I-80 in Sweetwater County, Wyo., before its right rear Firestone tire blew out and caused the car to roll over.

The suit said the tire sustained tread belt separation, in which the outer steel belt or tread of the tire separated from the rest of the tire. The suit, which said tire tread belt separation is a "typical" defect of the Firestone Radial ATX tire, alleged Bridgestone/Firestone was negligent because it failed to issue "adequate post-market warning" of the product to consumers.

Bridgestone/Firestone's general counsel could not be reached for comment on the suit.
