Down signs with Red Sox
Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000 | 11:44 a.m.
Henderson resident Rick Down, who lost out on a chance to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers, was hired as the Red Sox hitting coach Wednesday. He succeeds Jim Rice, who was fired and has been offered a job as a roving instructor and a community relations liaison. The Red Sox were next-to-last in the AL with a .267 team batting average last season.
Down was a finalist for the Dodgers' managing spot, which was given to Los Angeles bench coach Jim Tracy.
He was the Dodgers' hitting coach the past two seasons and held that post with the Orioles from 1996-98, and the Yankees from 1993-95.
