CARSON CITY -- Justice Nancy Becker won re-election to a full six-year term on the Nevada Supreme Court Tuesday in a landslide victory over attorney Gary Backus of Ely.
Becker, a former district judge in Clark County, won election to a two-year term in 1998 when the court was expanded to seven members. In this election, she spent $112,930 compared with the $300 by Backus, who suggested the court needed a rural representative.
Backus was able to win only in his home county of White Pine, but Becker swept the rest of the state, piling up 60 percent of the vote, compared with 24 percent for Backus and 14.5 percent for "None of These Candidates."
Chief Justice Robert Rose was unopposed and drew 75.4 percent of the vote. "None" received 23.3 percent. Justice Myron Leavitt, who also was elected to a two-year term in 1998, was not challenged. He got 77.3 percent and "None" received 22.1 percent of the vote.
