Prepaid Tuition program deadline approaches

Parents are facing a Jan. 31 deadline to enroll in the Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program. The next enrollment period won't start until late next summer.
The program allows parents to pay money on a monthly basis, getting a locked-in tuition rate and tax deferment until their children enroll in college.
The program, which began in 1998, enrolled about 6,000 families the first two years, with plan assets totaling about $20 million. Nevada is one of 48 states with such a program.
"The program has been wildly successful," said state Treasurer Brian Krolicki, whose office administers the program.
Under the program, parents can lock in low tuition rates by prepaying because the state invests the money.
