Letter: Don’t blame Bush if court ends abortions
Monday, Nov. 6, 2000 | 10:14 a.m.
If Roe v. Wade is overturned, it won't be George W's doing. Unfortunately, Roe v. Wade rests upon a very shaky premise, that the Constitution implies that American men and women have the right to privacy. The Constitution and Bill of Rights say nothing about privacy.
The stronger pro-choice argument is the property rights argument. All men and women have a right to own property. And a person's property begins with his or her own body. If a woman owns her own body, then she has a right to control her property. She cannot be forced to carry an unwanted intruder in her property.
Control over one's property (and body) is the essence of freedom. All other rights emerge from this right. Regrettably, we have lost many personal freedoms already, with drug laws and taxation. If Brian Greenspun is really interested in freedom, he should choose Libertarian candidate Harry Browne and forget about Al Gore.
