Lieberman plans Sunday stop in Las Vegas Valley
Friday, Nov. 3, 2000 | 10:53 a.m.
The Gore-Lieberman camp will make one last push for votes Sunday morning when vice presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman swings through Las Vegas for the second time in nine days.
Sen. Lieberman, D-Conn., is scheduled to arrive in Las Vegas at 10 a.m. for a two-hour visit, according to Mary Perren, Nevada's press secretary for the Gore-Lieberman campaign.
Perren said today that Lieberman's decision was made at the last minute and details of his visit have yet to be determined.
"He will push the message to get out and vote and that your vote is really important," Perren said. "Nevada is a state in play. From everything we've seen the state is close between Bush and Gore; we think we can win this state."
Lieberman's visit will highlight a weekend in Southern Nevada in which local politicians and celebrities rally the valley's Democrats to vote Tuesday.
On Sunday evening former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros and former Energy Secretary Federico Pena will appear at the El Rey Restaurant and Night Club during their "Your Vote Counts, Coast to Coast" tour that targets Hispanic Americans.
Clark County Commissioner Dario Herrera, who accompanied Lieberman on stage during the senator's Oct. 27 appearance on the UNLV campus, is scheduled to repeat his October speech in Spanish.
The event will is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the El Rey, 860 E. Twain Avenue.
On Saturday actors Jimmy Smits and Esai Morales are scheduled to appear at a "Soar with Gore" rally that will be held outside Clark County Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates campaign headquarters.
After the 9:30 a.m. event, which will be held at 433 Martin Luther King Boulevard, local Democrats will walk neighborhoods urging fellow party members to vote on Election Day.
