Letter: Gore values life of our planet
Friday, Nov. 3, 2000 | 10:01 a.m.
As leader of the world's only superpower, it's vital America's president values the environment and understands the clear and present dangers to it. Al Gore's visionary "Earth in the Balance" clearly illustrates his profound respect for the environment, as well as his grasp of threats to its continued viability.
Cynical conservatives like to mock Gore's environmentalism. Gore should wear their derision as a badge of honor, for it is the conservatives who know the price of everything, and the value of nothing. It is they who are the cultural progeny of the Old South, where even human beings came with a price.
It is also they who have transformed laissez faire capitalism into a religion with the transcendent value being the "bottom line," and it is they who have yet to understand that people don't create wealth, only nature creates wealth.
The conservative establishment has selected their presidential candidate, the prosaic George W. Bush, who neither values our living planet nor understands the threats to it. On the other hand, Al Gore understands and, because of this, is the one major candidate who has the potential of being a world-historical figure.
