Letter: Abortion modern 'right' to kill
Then a few years ago during the heated partial-birth abortion debates, I decided to take a hard look and let science be my guide to sort out the facts from the fluff on the issue. Using only solid, provable, unquestioned scientific and medical knowledge I sought answers to the following debated questions:

Letter: Bush would be a disaster as president
He says he's a friend of the working man. The truth is, the biggest portion of his tax cut will go to the top 1 percent. Bush uses the word "truth" a lot, but the truth is, he'd be a disaster as our president. He says he's a compassionate conservative. Hey, George, try selling that compassion stuff to the 142 you've executed (some of whom were denied DNA testing), and the 700,000 Texas kids without medical insurance.
Letter: Question 2 not about marriage
Boy, was I wrong. Turns out Question 2 does not have a thing to do with marriage. It isn't even about same-sex marriages, which are banned by Nevada law. An example of what Yes on 2 would accomplish: If a tourist in a long-term, same-sex relationship ended up in a Nevada intensive care unit due to a life-threatening auto accident or heart attack, their chosen life partner would not have the visitation rights granted to a family member. The right to visit a dying partner does not threaten anyone's marriage. Nevada will still be the state of quickie marriages and ...

Editorial: Technology can be key to survival
Prior to 1997, which is the year when portable defibrillators started to be used more frequently, the chances for survival weren't promising for heart attack victims. The American Heart Association said that of the 736 people who had cardiac arrest while visiting a casino from 1993 to 1996, only 159 survived. But between 1997 and 1999, the study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that of 105 people who had collapsed and were defibrillated in casinos, 56 recovered. Also remarkable was that none of them suffered brain damage, which can happen if the heart isn't started again fast ...

Editorial: Judge unhappy over Elko dispute
While we hope a compromise can be reached over this impasse, it is the county that stubbornly has refused to accept a common-sense mediation settlement, a deal that would allow the U.S. Forest Service to see if a way could be found to rebuild the road without violating federal laws that protect the endangered bull trout. This dispute has been brewing since 1995 -- it's time for Elko County officials to settle this amicably.

Remember when Dr. Richard Moore came to head up the Community College of Southern Nevada? That was six years ago, and he came aboard with new ideas and accepted the mission to reach out and find potential students.
