Slot technology expert dies

Verne Holmes, an executive at Las Vegas-based Ameristar Casinos Inc., died Monday. He was 55.
Holmes died of a heart attack following surgery, Ameristar said in a statement. Holmes had joined the company in 1999.
Holmes was a recognized expert on gaming technology, with 35 years' experience in the gaming industry. He had been leading Ameristar's efforts to integrate state-of-the-art technology into Ameristar's slot operations.
"He was a dedicated father and grandfather, and a brilliant man whose contributions to our industry will leave a lasting impact," said Craig Neilsen, Ameristar president and chief executive. "It was an honor to work with him and we will remember him for his many personal and professional strengths."
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
