27 percent rate hike sought by LV utility

Southwest Gas Corp., the primary supplier of natural gas to the Las Vegas area, is filing for a rate increase that would raise the average local customer's bill by $7.81 a month.
The 27 percent rate increase proposal, filed Tuesday with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, would take effect Dec. 1 if approved by regulators.
Company officials said an unprecedented increase in natural gas prices nationwide is responsible for the proposed increase, the second sought by the company this year.
