Kids to be taught to report abuse

A special two-hour safety class "Sticks and Stones" for children 6-12 is being presented 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lied Community School.

The class is designed to teach to recognize and report abuse and neglect. It consists of written and skills practice that are both fun and informative. Call 229-5072 to register.

Classes scheduled at Kesterson center

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting jewelry-making workshops. The first, 10 a.m.-noon June 5, 12 and 19, is a three-part workshop focusing on stamped metal jewelry.

The second workshop focuses on creating jewelry out of acrylic dough, 10 a.m.-noon June 10. Both workshops will be held at the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St. Call 565-2121.

Hikes planned for children and adults

Here are some of the programs offered this week at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Exploring South of Pine Creek: A 3-mile one-way hike Friday for 12-year-olds to adults from Oak Creek to Pine Creek on the Arnight trail. Vehicles will be left at both start and finish.

Desert Plant Walk: A 2-mile moderate walk Saturday for adults to learn about desert adaptations, ecology, food or medical uses.

Top of the Escarpment Hike: Strenuous 6-mile hike for 12-year-olds to adult from the summit to the hidden pool behind Bridge Mountain. This trip requires a high-clearance vehicle. Meet at the Fee Station parking lot.

Ice Box Canyon Hike: A 3-mile moderately strenuous hike for 8-year-olds to adult to explore the ecology of Ice Box Canyon. Some rock scrambling is involved.

Berkley to speak at fund-raiser

The Clark High School Academy of Finance will host its first spring fund-raising luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Golden Nugget.

Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., will be the guest speaker.

Cost for the luncheon is $20 per person. All of the money raised will benefit Academy of Finance scholarships and programming. For more information or to reserve a seat, call Jennifer Aamodt at 248-4200.

Park event focuses on safety in the sun

The first Stroller-Thon will begin 9 a.m. Saturday at Lone Mountain Park, 4425 N. Jensen St.

The Stroller-Thon is designed to bring families together for outdoor fun and education about sun safety, as well as raising funds for the Family to Family Connection, a nonprofit service agency.

Dr. Richard Tripoli, Southwest Medical Association's pediatric spokesman, will provide prevention information and answer questions parents have.
