Anderson falls short in East/West

Tuesday, May 30, 2000 | 10:30 a.m.

OPELIKA, Ala. -- While most of the UNLV golf team played its first practice round for the NCAA championships, senior Jeremy Anderson was the Rebels' representative in the 2000 Golfworld East/West matches Mobday at the Grand National Lake Course.

Anderson teamed with New Mexico's Wil Collins, and the duo faced Mississippi State's Alex Rocha and North Carolina's Max Harris in a best-ball, match-play format. Anderson and Collins both turned in solid rounds, but Rocha and Harris blistered the course and captured all three points in the matchup, scoring one for winning the front nine, one for the back and one overall.

Despite giving the East three points in Anderson's match, the West knocked off the defending champions, 15.5-11.5.

The East/West matches feature the top player from all 30 teams in the NCAA championships as well as six players who qualified individually.

"This competition includes the top players in the country and to be recognized among that group of people is certainly a nice feeling," Anderson said.

Anderson will rejoin his teammates for a second practice round today before official tournament play begins on Wednesday.

The All-District teams highlight 12 members from each of the nation's nine districts and serve as a preliminary selection process for the PING All-America team, which will be announced following the NCAA championships. Both Anderson and Kirk were All-District 8 and All-America selections last year, and it marks the third time in his career that Anderson has won the honor.
