County Commissioners OK money for library expansion

Monday, May 29, 2000 | 9:14 a.m.

Last week's unanimous vote comes after nearly 10 years of talk about expanding the library. The $3 million comes from a bond measure passed in 1994 by county voters.

Marguerite Kelnhofer, the library's manager, said the expansion is long overdue because of overcrowding.

Staffers have been crowded out of work areas to make way for incoming books and patrons have been kicked out of the reading area when special programs take place, she said.

The reference room must be used for children's programs because the children's area is too small, she added.

Library officials will hear the public's ideas for the branch at a June 16 meeting at the facility.

"We're looking forward to getting their input," said county library Director Nancy Cummings.
