Carson City planning commission to consider growth cap

Monday, May 29, 2000 | 9:15 a.m.

The Community Development Department is asking the panel to renew the city's growth-management ordinance, which would cap the growth rate at 3 percent by limiting the number of residential building permits that can be issued next year to 660.

If recommended, the Board of Supervisors would consider the matter at a July meeting.

Carson City is one of the few places in Nevada to have the ordinance. It was imposed in the late 1970s after the city's rapid growth in the 1960s and 1970s.

"It's a very subjective matter. But we've been using 3 percent, and it seems to be working well for us," said Walter Sullivan, community development director.

Typically, about 70 percent of the allowable permits are used.
