Gregory Dion, 48, of Sparks, was booked Thursday into the Washoe County Jail and released Friday on $7,500 bail.
Dion has been convicted twice of drunken driving and now faces felony charges that carry a mandatory prison sentence of one to six years.
The 28-year veteran of the Reno Police Department retired after his second DUI last year.
A convenience store clerk on Baring Boulevard phoned police Thursday after observing an intoxicated man trying to obtain money from a gas pump. The man mistook the pump for an ATM machine, she said.
The man then drove his truck to the drive-through of a nearby fast food restaurant, ordered food and left without picking it up, police said. He was later arrested after failing a field sobriety test.
