Rain Delays Indy 500
Sunday, May 28, 2000 | 12:53 p.m.
The 84th running of the race was scheduled to start at noon EDT, but it began raining about 1 1/2 hours earlier. The rain got so heavy the cars were pulled off pit road.
The heavy rain tapered off before noon, but it continued to sprinkle on and off. Bright red trucks were brought on the track to dry the asphalt surface, and the race started at 3:10 p.m. EDT
The 200-lap race must go beyond the halfway point to be official. The forecast Sunday called for a 40 percent chance of rain, with thunderstorms possible. Temperatures were forecast in the lower to mid-60s.
The last time the Indy 500 was rained out was in 1997, when it was postponed until Tuesday. The race was delayed 40 minutes by rain in 1998.
