SUN STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

UNLV forward Dalron Johnson has been invited to participate in the U.S. National Junior Team tryouts at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Johnson, a 6-10 sophomore, is among 28 of the nation's top men's basketball players aged 20 or younger vying for a spot this weekend on the team.

Johnson, of Los Angeles, earned 2000 Mountain West Conference All-Tournament team honors after helping the Rebels to the title. He was UNLV's fourth-leading scorer (11.9 points per game) and second-leading rebounder (6.9 per game). He was also selected Co-Freshman of the Year in the MWC.

The final 12-member team will be named during a July 10-17 training camp at a site still to be determined.

The team will be coached by Syracuse's Jim Boeheim. His assistants will be Ray McCallum (University of Houston) and former UNLV assistant Jay Wright (Hofstra).

The team will represent the U.S. at the Junior World Championships qualifying tournament in Brazil on July 19-23.
