Phoenix-based America West Airlines, which learned Monday that it has received U.S. Department of Transportation permission to add flights to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport from Las Vegas, will begin flying them later this year.
The Department of Transportation authorized three slot exemptions for America West, meaning it can add up to three takeoffs or landings from the airport during a restricted period. The company plans to use the three exemptions and add a fourth during unrestricted hours.
A spokeswoman for the company said America West, which already has one nonstop round-trip flight to O'Hare from Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport, will add a second flight in mid-August and a third in October.
The company plans to use 150-passenger twin-engine Airbus A-320 jets on the routes.
Las Vegas-based National Airlines received five exemptions at O'Hare and plans to add three daily round-trip flights from Las Vegas by the end of the year.
