Thursday, May 25, 2000 | 10:46 a.m.

A man fleeing from police in a sport utility vehicle drove the wrong way in the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 near Mesquite and crashed into another vehicle, killing himself and the other driver this morning, Nevada Highway Patrol said.

The chase started about 5:20 a.m. when Mesquite Police received a report of a man driving a truck on a golf course. The driver fled and highway patrol troopers stopped the man on I-15. After the driver handed the trooper a passport, he fled in the truck again, police said.

The chase on northbound I-15 reached speeds of 105 mph heading into Arizona. Mohave County, Ariz., sheriff's deputies put road spikes on the highway to stop the truck, but the driver went into the southbound lanes going the wrong way, police said.

The driver, whose name was not available this morning, caused an accident injuring a 60-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man, police said. He then crashed head-on into another vehicle, killing himself and the other driver, police said.
