Letter: Homeowners’ lawsuits often unnecessary
Thursday, May 25, 2000 | 9:14 a.m.
Framing contractors, electrical contractors, plumbers, HVAC and flooring contractors have reported instances where they have quickly responded to homeowner complaints and made repairs.
They have done so without delay, and have incurred considerable expense to satisfy the homeowner. These cases don't make the news because the homeowner no longer has a dramatic, uncorrected problem to show off for the camera. Happy homeowners aren't news.
Most contractors find it easier and cheaper to simply make the repairs. The last thing they desire is to be named in a lawsuit or brought before the Contractor's Board on a complaint. Too often, however, the only notice the contractor gets that there is a concern comes in the form of a lawsuit.
By then, it's too late. As reported in the article, offers to make repairs or work out a solution go unheeded by lawyers eager for a monetary settlement. The contractor is locked out.
The only way to safeguard affordable home ownership in Nevada is to work out a process in which homeowners and contractors work together to guarantee quality.
It's a shame that homeowners enter lawsuits that will take several years to resolve, at tremendous cost for all concerned, when contractors are willing to cure.
