Three inches of hail pelt Sierra

Wednesday, May 24, 2000 | 10:24 a.m.

Two weeks after a spring snowstorm dusted the Sierra, the plows were out again. Only this time, it was hail.

An unexpectedly vigorous storm dropped up to three inches of hail around Lake Tahoe Tuesday evening and plows were brought out to clear roadways.

Virginia City got about one-half inch of hail and scattered hail fell in Carson City as well.

Elsewhere, the storm brought rain, which doused any threat of wildland fires caused by frequent lightning strikes.

The storm largely followed U.S. 50 across Nevada and dumped about one-half inch of rain in Ely.

Rainwater knocked debris loose onto stretches of Nevada 342 between Gold Hill and Virginia City as well as Six-Mile Canyon Road in Storey County.

"We took a lot of lightning strikes, with power outages scattered around the area," said Roxanne Strauser, a spokeswoman for the Storey County Sheriff's Office.

Forecasters said more showers were possible through Thursday as afternoon temperatures warm in the moist, unstable air.

The system brought some relief from temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s. Readings were expected to be about 10 degrees lower following the storm.
