Columnist Peter Benton: Champions crowned at Las Vegas CC

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.
Tommy Martin was crowned Men's Club Champion of the Las Vegas Country Club last week on the strength of his 4-3 victory over J.P. Oberweis.
The upstart Martin played superbly in all of his matches, and let it be known that he was a force to be reckoned with in his first-round 3-1 upset of Vic Cohen.
Aspiring Senior Tour player Bill Bolton was the next to be defeated by Martin, losing 4-2. In a close semifinal match, Chuck Weigman succumbed 2-1 as both players put on a fine exhibition of golf.
The final match was a thriller. In his semifinal match, Oberweis narrowly defeated last year's champion and the man expected to repeat as club champion, Bruce Ashworth.
That, however, was not to be. Martin played superbly and, unlike his opponent, made the crucial putts.
Crowned first flight champion was Steve Rice, who defeated Warren Peterson 2-1. Leo Durant prevailed in the second flight, edging Ken Westfield 2-1. In the third flight, Charles Snavely beat Peter Fischer 1-up and in the fourth flight, Paul Howell narrowly defeated Allan Vogel 1-up. Irv Bronstein defeated an ailing Byron LeBow to win the fifth flight 6-4.
Laurie Durant retained the ladies club championship title with her convincing 3-2 victory over Rhonda Mushkin. In the ladies first flight, Mary Weidman answered all challengers before garnering the title 2-up over Gloria Carson.
Greer has joined the Giant Golf Academy staff at the Callaway Golf Center on Sunset and Las Vegas Boulevard where he will be teaching full time.
Greer can be reached at the academy office at 837-1720.
