Letter: Scenery hurt by billboard ads

Monday, May 22, 2000 | 10:13 a.m.

As someone with experience in dealing with members of the billboard industry, I suggest being very cautious in negotiating with them. They are not to be trusted. The best course of action is to stop new construction of billboards and not allow existing billboards to be moved or relocated when future development requires their removal.

In my state of Florida, more than 220 Florida communities have passed laws prohibiting the construction of new billboards. In Jacksonville, more than 800 billboards have actually been removed over the past 5 years, and the city is far more beautiful and attractive today.

Preserving and restoring scenic beauty is good for business. Smart businesses know that billboards are unnecessary and a wasteful use of the advertising dollar.

Citizens may choose to avoid those businesses that use billboards; and they should call those businesses to let them know that scenic beauty is more important than "litter on a stick."

Best wishes to the citizens of Las Vegas in preserving and restoring scenic beauty. Your scenery is precious; don't lose it.
