Guinn may have jumped at wrong gun on education budget

Monday, May 22, 2000 | 4:26 a.m.

Gov. Kenny Guinn jumped the gun last week when he said there's no way he would accept a $1.1 billion budget plan for the state's higher education system, the chair of the Nevada Board of Regents said.

Jill Derby said the governor's criticism appears to stem from a misunderstanding.

"The budget presented at our April meeting is our first look at campus and system priorities. This is not our final budget request," she said in a prepared statement.

"We will review our options and present a budget that is not only responsive to Gov. Guinn's request, but is also reflective of the board's responsibility to advocate for the funding necessary to provide for projected growth."

Enrollment at Nevada universities and community colleges has soared by 54 percent over the last decade.

The Board of Regents will meet in Elko on June 25 and 26 to prioritize budget requests.

Guinn has told all state agencies to submit flat spending plans - with no increases over current levels - and wait to consider requests for extra funding.
