Western Ideal sets record

Sunday, May 21, 2000 | 10:56 a.m.

Western Ideal ($10, $4.20, $2.10), owned and bred by George Segal's Brittany Farm, improved his record to three wins in four starts this year, scoring by a head over Dragon Again ($2.60, $2.10). It was 5 3/4 lengths back to Goliath Bayama ($2.10) in third.

"I knew there was going to be a lot of speed," said winning driver Mike Lachance. "Good horses come from all over the track, and I wind up with a dream trip."

Red Bow Tie, carried the field through fractions of 26.1, 52.4 and 1:21.1. He faded to last.

Western Ideal, a 5-year-old, had been sidelined at age 3 with a tendon injury. At 4, he finished in the money in 11 of 22 starts. He opened his 2000 campaign with back-to-back sub 1:50 efforts.

Western Ideal's time erased the 1:48.4 standard set by Mumbo King on May 6 at the Meadowlands.
