Friday, May 19, 2000 | 10:25 a.m.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Las Vegas' Jimmy Vasser went to the top of the speed chart Thursday on a blustery day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for the 84th running of the Indianapolis 500.

Vasser, driving the Target/Chip Ganassi Racing G-Force/OldsmobileV8, nailed down the day's fastest lap of 221.681 mph during the final hour of practice. Vasser is the sixth different driver to have the top speed in six days of practice.

Vasser led a one-two assault by the Ganassi team in back-up cars with teammate Juan Montoya second-fastest of the day at 221.555. Only 24-thousandths of a second separated the teammates.
