Letter: Column afforded escape to shore

Friday, May 19, 2000 | 9:48 a.m.

Steve Bornfeld's May 5 column hit home. I love water and I don't mean the simpering fountains here. I was born within walking distance of the Detroit and St. Claire rivers. I was exposed to the Great Lakes.

In the '40s I saw the Atlantic for the first time and fell in love. I went back several times a year and always made sure I spent time with the roiling Atlantic.

Then I moved to California and the Pacific was nice, especially with a full moon (not a harvest moon, however) shining on it. I liked the feel of the waves rushing out from under my feet.

Then my husband died and I took a trip up the East Coast and in Maine the thundering surf beating against the rocks made my aching heart feel better.

So now in this arid place with what they laughingly call a lake, I, too, escape in my mind to the East Coast to my beloved Atlantic, sometimes to New York and sometimes to Maine, and again find the peace I found there.

I think Solitudes's Seascapes would change your mind; it has gulls and foghorns and a wonderful pounding surf.

Thank you for that wonderful column and showing me that we can escape our surroundings anytime we feel the need.
