WASHINGTON -- U.S. antitrust investigators are examining the competitive effects of a website that more than two dozen airlines -- including the five biggest in the United States -- are developing to sell travel services.

A travel agents group complained to U.S. authorities this year that the airlines seek to monopolize the sale of travel services over the Internet. The site, scheduled to start by the end of June, will let customers compare fares at rival carriers and view online discounts, the airlines said. Plans call for providing data on hotels, car rentals and other travel services.

The site was announced in November by UAL Corp.'s United Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc., Northwest Airlines Corp. and Continental Airlines Inc. as a way to compete with expanding travel-services sites. Other carriers, including AMR Corp.'s American Airlines, have joined the effort.
