Three of four incumbents on the Clark County School Board and both of the university regents whose offices are up for grabs are running for re-election.
At the close of filing Monday, the only incumbent School Board member not seeking re-election was Lois Tarkanian, wife of former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian. Instead, she is taking a shot at the Clark County Commission District C seat held by Lance Malone.
School Board incumbents seeking to hold on to their seats are Marybeth Scow in District A, Ruth L. Johnson in District B and Shirley Barber in District D. Eight candidates are after Tarkanian's District E seat.
Barber, a 65-year-old former elementary school principal and employee of the school district for 28 years, faces three opponents -- Donald Fondriasopolous, Ruth Irene Spear and Beatrice Denice Turner, all of Las Vegas.
Scow, a 47-year-old Henderson homemaker, faces three opponents -- Isaac Farrell and Angela Palomo, both of Henderson, and Tiger Todd of Las Vegas.
Johnson, 40, faces three opponents -- Tony P. Bulloch of North Las Vegas and Gil Castillo and Jim Dreitzler, both of Las Vegas.
Those seeking the seat to be vacated by Tarkanian, 65, are LeRoy "Lee" Bernstein, Denise Brodsky, Phillip Lee Flaherty, Jacqueline Jones, Kenneth J. Kukuda, Keith Lynam, David A. Meckley and Tonie Sison, all of Las Vegas.
On the Board of Regents Subdistrict A, Regent Dave Phillips is seeking re-election, as is Subdistrict D Regent Mark Alden.
Alden of Las Vegas faces Wallace Hill Best of Boulder City, Juana Leia Jordan of Las Vegas and Jim Ratigan of Henderson.
Phillips' opponent is Linda C. Howard. Both are residents of Las Vegas.
Tracey Lewis of Las Vegas is running unopposed for State Board of Education Subdistrict A. Candidates for State Board of Education Subdistrict D are Edward Goldman, John Hawk and John E. Scott II, all of Henderson.
