Stan Shaw sentencing delayed in child support case

Tuesday, May 16, 2000 | 10:20 a.m.

A federal judge has delayed sentencing for actor Stan Shaw to give him additional time to pay off his child support debt.

Shaw, 46, appeared with Nicholas Cage in the 1998 movie "Snake Eyes." He was indicted in August after authorities accused him of failing to pay more than $60,000 in support for his 10-year-old son, who lives in Las Vegas.

The actor, who lives in California, pleaded guilty in December to a felony charge of willful failure to pay child support.

He paid $20,000 of the debt two weeks ago and has been trying to refinance his home to pay the $47,800 balance he now owes, California attorney Lawrence Ecoff said.

U.S. District Judge Johnnie Rawlinson postponed Shaw's sentencing until June 1 after Ecoff told her his client needed the extra time to finish refinancing his home. The lawyer said Shaw can reduce his potential sentence by paying off his entire child support debt.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sharon Lever said Shaw could be sentenced to five years of probation and four months of house arrest if he failed to pay off the debt. He can reduce the possible sentence to two years of probation if he succeeds in making the full payment.
