Edwards to meet with probation officer next week

Tuesday, May 16, 2000 | 8:39 a.m.

A meeting had been scheduled for Monday, but was canceled for an unspecified reason.

Edwards will meet with the probation officer several times throughout the next few months as the officer puts together an elaborate file that will include interviews with Edwards' friends, financial records, medical history and other personal information.

The file is reviewed by the judge during sentencing. A sentencing date has not been set.

Edwards was convicted May 9 on 17 counts of racketeering, mail and wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering related to the licensing of riverboat casinos during his last term in office and after his January 1996 retirement.

The sentences on the 17 counts add up to 250 years, but Edwards is not likely to be given one so long. At 72, however, any amount of jail time could become a life sentence for the former four-term governor.

Also convicted were Edwards'son, Stephen, Edwards' personal aide, Andrew Martin, Baton Rouge businessman Bobby Johnson and Eunice cattleman Cecil Brown.
