Actor given two weeks to pay child support

Tuesday, May 16, 2000 | 11:38 a.m.

A federal judge Monday gave actor Stan Allen Shaw until June 1 to pay off the balance of more than $60,000 in back child support he owes the mother of his 10-year-old son.

Shaw, 46, who most recently appeared with Nicolas Cage in the movie "Snake Eyes," was indicted in August under a 1998 federal law aimed at collecting child support payments from deadbeat parents who live in another state. He pleaded guilty Dec. 20 to the charge.

The boy's mother, Serdina White, told authorities last year she was working several jobs and living in a weekly motel in Las Vegas because she couldn't afford permanent housing.

Shaw was scheduled to be sentenced Monday, but U.S. District Court Johnnie Rawlinson granted the actor more time to raise $47,800 he still owes White. Shaw's attorney said he is trying to refinance his California home and the lenders have yet to approve the loan.

Shaw paid White $20,000 two weeks ago. He is required to pay White $500 a month in child support.

Shaw faces up to four months of house arrest and five years probation, but that sentence could be reduced if he is able to pay his child support debt.

The Chicago native is a veteran Hollywood actor whose career spans nearly three decades. Some of Shaw's film credits include roles in the 1996 movie "Daylight," opposite Sylvester Stallone, and the 1991 hit "Fried Green Tomatoes," in which he played Big George.

Shaw also appeared in the films "Harlem Nights," "Rising Sun," "Houseguest," "The Boys in Company C," and "Body of Evidence."

His television movie credits include "Roots: The Next Generation," "The Courtmartial of Jackie Robinson," and "Billionaire Boys Club." Shaw also has guest-starred on the television shows "Murder She Wrote," "LA Law," "Wiseguy," and "Hill Street Blues."

In 1998, Shaw received a $100,000 out-of-court settlement for a lawsuit he filed against the Los Angeles Police Department. Shaw said he was injured in 1994 when a police officer handcuffed him. The officer stopped Shaw as he left the home of rap music star Tone Loc, who police were investigating after receiving a complaint from a pizza restaurant.
