Honda to host special program

As part of the third annual Child Safety Awareness Day, Honda and Little League Baseball are teaming up to teach Las Vegas area families how to stay safe.

A program will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Honda West, 4645 W. Tropicana Ave.

Child Safety Awareness Day allows Honda to reach local communities and provide families with information and instruction on a range of topics, including vehicle and traffic safety, prevention of common household and sports-related injuries, and safe usage of the Internet.

Dealerships will showcase Safety First, an instructional video produced by Little League Baseball. The video features former Major League Baseball stars Steve Garvey and Steve Lyons and teaches the basics of the game, pointers on getting to the game safely and tips on avoiding injuries.

For additional information, call Dawn Taylor at 367-1919.

Series of hikes, classes this week

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the visitor's center.

To make reservations or for information, call 363-1922. Some coming programs:

Tales of the Moon: This program will talk about Indian fables and astronomers' theories about our celestial neighbor Wednesday. Ages 8 to adult are welcome and can meet at the horse riding parking lot on State Route 159, 1.5 miles past the visitor center entrance. This is a 4-mile moderate hike with a 400 degree elevation gain.

Wee Hike -- Bats: Nighttime is the time of bat viewing. Infant to adults can sit quietly and watch them fly among us at the White Rock parking lot from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Before the Pioneers: Numerous prehistoric Indian cultural artifacts remain to be seen at Red Rock Canyon, but are often overlooked. Ages 8 to adult can join in this 3-mile guided hike Friday along the Lost Creek-Willow Spring Heritage Trail to learn about the early peoples who have called Red Rock home.

Mysteries of Wilson Canyon: It is Archaeological Awareness and Historic Prevention Week. Ages 8 to adult can enjoy a 5-mile moderate hike in the Pine Creek area Saturday and discuss the history of the two Wilson families who once lived in the area.

24-hour relay set this weekend

Southern Nevada residents are invited to participate in the American Cancer Society's fifth annual Relay for Life, "A Metro Celebration" beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at UNLV's Rebel Track.

Relay for Life is a celebration of life. Teams of eight to 15 will walk, run, jog and even push baby strollers around the track for 24 hours. When not on the track, teams will pitch tents for an overnight camp-out while enjoying food and entertainment.

Tiny Town, a play area featuring carnival rides, clowns, face painters and other activities, will be available for participants under the age of 10.

To officially open the relay ceremonies, cancer survivors of all ages will walk the first lap around the track, the Victory Lap.

All of the funds raised from the Relay for Life will assist the American Cancer Society in providing research, education, advocacy and a variety of patient services.

To register a team or volunteer, call Barbara Erickson at 798-6877, Ext. 226.

Annual event to be held at LVMS

The Las Vegas Soap Box Derby is seeking participants for its 10th annual event, which will be held Saturday and Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The amateur youth racing event is held annually in Southern Nevada for boys and girls ages 9-16. Racers can compete in one of the three separate divisions, stock, super stock or masters.

The three divisional champions will represent Las Vegas in the 63rd annual All American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, on July 22.

Each participant pays a $25 entry fee and must build his or her own car, which hopefully can be sponsored by an area business or organization. The car takes about a weekend to build.

Sponsors are still needed to support the race and to help pay for the car kits. The cars are built from kits purchased from the All American Soap Box Derby. Each kit costs close to $500.

For an entry form, call 564-8161.
