Letter: Gay movement gaining ground
Sunday, May 14, 2000 | 11:01 a.m.
Gays and lesbians are going to be together ... petition or no petition. We are going to have our commitment ceremonies ... petition or no petition. Yes, Nevada may pass a law preventing gays from legally marrying, but eventually that will fall apart. Maybe not next year. Maybe not next decade, but one day gays and lesbians will be able to marry in all 50 states!
"That is crazy talk," some of you might say. Well let's go back to 1970. One million gays will march in Washington. Vermont will sign a "civil union" bill. There will be a gay character on almost every network prime time TV show. Many businesses will be gay-owned and operated. There will be very large gay pride celebrations and parades across the nation. High schools will organize gay student organizations. There will be dozens of gay bars and clubs in every major city. Gay politicians. There will even be a gay Olympics. In 1970 that would have been "crazy talk." But in the year 2000 ... all of that exists and more will follow. I'm sorry if I busted your bubble Mr. Ziser.
