Seven LV flights canceled by United

Friday, May 12, 2000 | 10:48 a.m.

Seven of United Airlines' 39 flights to McCarran International Airport were canceled Thursday, an airport spokeswoman said.

Airline officials say they canceled 150 of 2,400 flights nationwide Thursday because some pilots have decided not work overtime due to a lack of progress in contract negotiations.

But representatives of the Air Line Pilots Association, the union representing United's pilots, said the crew shortages are the result of a pilot shortage United pilots said they had forecast a year ago. The union denied there is an organized effort to refuse overtime work.

United has a handful of long-range flights to and from McCarran, but the bulk of its routes are high-frequency Shuttle by United flights that operate between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, San Francisco and Denver.

Chicago-based United said in addition to the 150 flights canceled by staffing shortages, another 230 were canceled due to bad weather. The company could not be reached for comment on whether the seven Las Vegas cancellations were due to weather or staffing problems.
