Ensign also said he'll try to get a clearer statement from GOP presidential hopeful George W. Bush on a possible nuclear waste dump in Nevada.
The Republican candidate for the Senate seat that Democrat Richard Bryan is giving up also said his campaign budget is about $5 million, and he's more than halfway toward that goal.
He said little about his main Democratic rival, Ed Bernstein, other than to remark that he didn't like partisan comments that followed Bush's brief statement on the dump that could be located at Nevada's Yucca Mountain.
Bernstein had joined with other top Democrats in the state in criticizing Bush for not saying whether he would veto - as President Clinton has done - legislation that would weaken health and safety standards at Yucca Mountain.
Ensign narrowly lost in a 1998 race against Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev. Since then, he said the two "buried the hatchet" following harsh rhetoric during that campaign.
