Baby is born after collision kills two

A newborn and his mother are in critical condition today at University Medical Center after a crash killed two others in their car Wednesday night at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Main Street.
The baby was delivered by emergency Caesarean section. His mother, 22-year-old Michelle Jamieson of Las Vegas, was in her third trimester of pregnancy.
Mary Lynn Sargent, 46, of Las Vegas, and a passenger of her car died in the crash, the Clark County coroner said today. The identity of the passenger, a 59-year-old Las Vegas man, was withheld until family can be notified.
Police say a 1979 Ford pickup struck Sargent's 1986 Oldsmobile sedan as it was stopped for a red light at the intersection at about 8:40 p.m.
The driver of the truck, Michael Owen Pickett, 24, of Las Vegas, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on three counts of driving under the influence with death or substantial bodily harm, Metro Police said. Police said they also recovered narcotics paraphernalia.
The pickup was traveling at a high rate of speed and tried to stop, witnesses told police. The impact pushed the sedan all the way across Owens through the intersection -- about 215 feet -- crumpling the trunk and folded the back half of the car toward the front half, Metro Sgt. Curt Albert said.
"The driver of the truck tried to flee the area, but the front of his truck was pretty beat up so he tried to get out," Albert said. "As soon as he got out, witnesses grabbed him and kept him from running off."
At about the same time, a Nevada Highway Patrol officer came upon the accident.
"The debris was still flying in the air as he was driving by," Albert said. "He handcuffed the driver of the truck and took him to the Clark County Detention Center."
Albert said that alcohol appears to have played a role in the accident.
Jamieson was rushed to the hospital, but Sargent and her other passenger died from their injuries at the scene. They were the 28th and 29th fatalities in Metro's jurisdiction this year. Sun reporter
