Unidentified legislator pays charge card debt

Wednesday, May 10, 2000 | 3:37 a.m.

Lorne Malkiewich, director of the Legislative Counsel Bureau, says the legislator called him and told him that he had paid the overdue debt.

Malkiewich said he wouldn't reveal the identity of the legislator because the debt information is a private matter between the legislator and Diners Club.

The attorney general's office made a similar decision Monday about the identities of 44 state employees who owed Diners Club a combined $71,000.

Because of the bad debt, Diners Club has decided to impose a $10 per employee annual charge on each state employee who uses its corporate travel card. About 2,900 employees receive the travel cards.

The legislator and the other employees made state-authorized travel and then were reimbursed for their expenses by the state, but they did not pay Diners Club the debt on their cards.

Malkiewich said all 63 legislators originally were given the cards, but now only 24 use them. He said his office can quickly advance travel money to legislators and employees and that they don't need the convenience of travel cards.
