Truckee and Reno fire departments to merge
Wednesday, May 10, 2000 | 4:43 a.m.
Meeting as the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Board, commissioners voted 3-2 on Tuesday for further negotiations with Reno over the last details of an agreement for the takeover of county fire services by Reno.
In that motion, the board said the contract would be subject to ratification of a five-year labor contract by Truckee Meadows Fire Fighters Local 2487.
That means the local will be voting on a contract that has been negotiated by Reno Firefighters Local 731 and Reno city officials. When Truckee Meadows firefighters join Reno as city employees, they would become members of Local 731, which has the exclusive right to represent Reno firefighters.
County financial consultant Mary Walker says consolidating fire services will save the two entities $5.1 million over the next three years, including avoiding duplicative costs in providing new service.
