Second carjacking suspect agrees to plea bargain

Wednesday, May 10, 2000 | 10:22 a.m.

The second of two people suspected of being involved in a deadly carjacking has struck a deal with prosecutors.

Randy Dean Goodrick, 20, agreed to plead guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery with use of a deadly weapon and second-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon.

Goodrick, who faces up to 50 years in prison, is scheduled to be sentenced June 28 by District Judge Kathy Hardcastle.

According to police, Goodrick, Jamie Aghas and Jeremy Michael Butler decided they wanted to hijack a car on Aug. 13 and drove to an affluent area of Summerlin.

The three followed a BMW into a gated community, and Aghas dropped the men off. They then tried to kidnap the driver of the BMW and steal his vehicle at gunpoint, police said. The owner of the BMW managed to take a shotgun away from the suspects and fired two shots at them as they drove off.

Butler, 20, was killed when the stolen BMW raced through a red light at Charleston Boulevard and Hualapai Way at 80 mph, hitting a motorcycle driven by Phillip Gastineau who was also killed.

Goodrick, who had been struck in the leg by the BMW owner's shots, was arrested at a hospital.
