Reid adds millions to agriculture bill

Wednesday, May 10, 2000 | 4:42 a.m.

Reid, who sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee, pushed on Tuesday for the emergency funding as part of the Bureau of Land Management's restoration package.

A top priority is the elimination of cheatgrass from the basin. It's blamed for fueling many of last summer's disastrous fires, which blackened some 1.7 million acres in Nevada alone.

The bill allocates $3 million for that effort and $5.1 million for buying and planting new trees and shrubs in forest and woodland areas of the Great Basin.

An additional $2.8 million targets the restoration of more than 700 miles of fencing, and $4.7 million will go toward housing and preparing 1,800 wild horses whose habitat was damaged for adoption or until they can be returned to the range.

About $200,000 would be used to restore or repair damaged signs, stands, parking barriers and water pipelines at recreation areas in the basin with $1.4 million provided for cricket and grasshopper control.
