Malone to make re-election bid official

Wednesday, May 10, 2000 | 10:24 a.m.

First-term Clark County Commissioner Lance Malone announced he will formally file for re-election and try to keep his District C seat.

Malone said he accomplished many of the goals he set when he was elected to the board in 1996.

He accelerated the construction schedule of the Las Vegas Beltway, which will reach the Summerlin area by the summer of 2001. Malone also worked with Gov. Kenny Guinn to expedite the widening of U.S. 95 to relieve congestion in his northwest district.

However, Malone's four-year term on the commission has not been without controversy.

The commissioner was pulled before the state Ethics Commission in 1996 after voting to award a lucrative airport concession contract to a family friend.

More recently, Malone angered casino companies and some constituents when he assured them he would vote against a casino in Spring Valley, then changed his mind.

Malone's most threatening opponent will be Clark County School Board member Lois Tarkanian, who was expected to file today.

State Assembly Majority Leader Richard Perkins, D-Henderson, has filed for re-election to his District 23 seat.

Perkins, a captain with the investigations division of the Henderson Police Department, said legislative redistricting will be a crucial part of the next majority leader's job.

Democrat John Oceguera said he will run for Assembly District 16, citing a continuing commitment to service.
